It was the 20th anniversary of the Iceman Cometh, one of the biggest mountain bike races in the country. Over 4700 racers lined up for the start in Kalkaska, MI, starting with the first wave at 9am and finishing with the Pros at 2:30pm. With over $30,000 in prize money, both the men's and women's fields were highly competitive. Alison made the initial selection of five riders after the first mile of the race. Amanda Carey (Kenda) last year's winner, Jenna Rhinehart (Specialized), Heather Irmiger (Gary Fisher Subaru), and Kelli Emmett (Giant Bicycles) were in the front group. Despite aggressive riding by all, the group stayed together until 8 miles to go. Kelli attacked hard through some rollers with Alison countering. That was enough to drop Jenna and Amanda. Kelli, Heather, and Alison rode together until a mile to go when Alison attacked up the last steep climb, got a small gap, and was able to hold off Kelli Emmett at the finish. It was the first big national win for Alison this year, and follows a string of podium appearances in the last four UCI cyclocross races.
