Shonny and Danelle go big in Hawaii with a 5th and 7th at the X-Terra World Championships
Shonny Vanlandingham and Danelle Kabush scored big in Hawaii with a 5th and 7th respectively at the X-Terra World Championships in Maui.
Suffering from a head-cold, Shonny Vanlandingham dug deep and powered her way to the podium. Shonny has had a successful year of XTERRA racing with several race wins and podium finishes in each race she entered. Her swim has improved and she really looked like a triathlete instead of a mountain biker, in her words, "faking the swim and the run". Her preparation and fitness were great going into the race. However two days before, Vanlandingham started to feel a sore throat and head cold. By the time the race came around it was full blown with a fever. Just like last year when she had a severely sprained ankle, she refused to sit on the sidelines. The World Championship is the biggest race of the year and Shonny was determined to do her best despite the extra challenge of not feeling well. Her swim was good, the bike was mediocre and by the run she had really started to fade. After running in third off the bike Shonny faded to 5th to take the last podium step."
Danelle was also a bit disappointed, thinking she was starting off with a stellar swim. When she came out of the water, she realized she was behind her usual group of X-Terra-izers. So come from behind she did when she spent the entire mountain bike leg passing her foes. A decent trail run and Danelle crossed the line 7th in the World.
